How does Shiatsu work? The philosophy underlying Shiatsu is that vital energy
flows throughout the body in a network of electromagnetic energy pathways known as meridians. An energy blockage or 'stagnation' may occur, which produces a symptom. Based on an assessment of your health, constitution and presenting symptoms, the practitioner uses a variety of techniques to release tension and improve energy flow. This has the effect of stimulating circulation and the flow of lymphatic fluid, which works to relieve muscle tension and ease joint stiffness. It also calms the nervous system. What to expect in a Shiatsu session Shiatsu sessions at the clinic usually last one hour and take place on a futon at floor level. The client remains fully clothed throughout, wearing warm, loose clothing. Some pressure points may feel tender and a little painful when pressed – 'nice pain' – but this helps stimulate the release of endorphins, the body's natural pain killer. Shiatsu works with the individual at an emotional/mental as well as physical level. Following a treatment the client may feel revitalized and invigorated, yet profoundly relaxed.
